(UpVery.com) Mar 11, 2010 -- Mplayer is a "player" multi "in many ways: multimedia, multiplatform, multiformat, equal-winning ... It works on Windows, Mac OS X and GNU / Linux. Supports dozens of audio and video formats that do not list them because I prefer to refer you to the official website.

MPlayer is a program for the command line, but there are several versions with GUI if you prefer. Among these I recommend smplayer. This article will review some of useful options to get started in using Mplayer.

1. Installation

Usually you will find the name of mplayer on almost any distro GNU / Linux. Say you're using Arch Linux, then run as root (formerly enabled the repository "extra"):

# Pacman-S mplayer

2. Implementation

Mplayer runs without any choice to see the aid.

$ Mplayer

These are some of the options you find most useful for video playback:

* P or SPACE to pause for playback.
* Q or ESC to exit.
* Up / Down to move forward / 1 minutes delayed.
* Right / Left to advance / delay 10 seconds.
* J to enable / disable subtitles.
* M to mute.
* # To change audio language.

3. Play a DVD

From the beginning.

$ Mplayer-nocache dvdnav: / / 1

Or just certain chapters.

$ Mplayer-nocache dvdnav: / / 1-chapter 5.7

Also on your hard drive supports one of the titles.

$ Mplayer-nocache dvdnav: / / 1-dumpstream titulo.vob

4. Play anime in MKV format

$ Mplayer GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

The same goes for a lot of formats.

5. Play video in slow slow media (DVD, VCD, file systems, NFS / SMB)

$ Mplayer-cache 8912-cache-min 4 GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

6. Normalizes audio volume

$ Mplayer-af volnorm GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

7. Change the size of subtitles

$ Mplayer-subfont-text-scale 3 GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

8. Play video in ASCII

Here we use the famous library libcaca.

$ Mplayer-vo caca GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

With this we see other available video outputs

$ Mplayer-vo help

9. Convert the video into a GIF animation

$ Mplayer-vo gif89a GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

10. Change the video aspect to 4:3

$ Mplayer-monitoraspect 4:3 GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

11. Turns the playback window

$ Mplayer-flip GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

12. Play at high speed

$ Mplayer-Speed 7 GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

13. Video playback on slow machines

$ Mplayer-lavdopts skiploopfilter = all-framedrop GeniusParty-GALA.mkv

Conclusions

By far my favorite player is mplayer. But as with other commands, I present only a limited range of options in hopes of encouraging them to try this powerful multimedia tool. Mplayer mencoder also includes an audio / video encoder of such quality that deserves a separate article.
